Continuing my series of Innovation in Publishing, beyond my academic paper at rdcu.be/s3nx, today I explore the Dutch publishing association’s Renew The Book.
Groep Algemene Uitgevers (GAU), the association of book publishers in the Netherlands, sponsored the program and run it in conjunction with Rockstart. They pick 5 startups, take 40 days, the winner gets €15K, and they take no equity.
In 2017, 53 startups from 25 countries applied. Those chosen come to Amsterdam and work w the publishers. The startups picked for 2017 are:
- Writing for TiNY is children’s book publisher using bespoke software for highly personalized books about changes, worries & milestones.
- StoryTourist is a new way to travel and experience books at the very spots where the action takes place – “it’s like Pokémon Go for stories!”
- WriteReader enables kids to become authors and publish their digital books while learning to read and write.
- Zola Books offers a set of proprietary tech products enabling anyone to easily sell any book in any format from their website.
WriteReader won in 2017 and Zola Books won an “audience award.”
