For the past 5 weeks, Folio: Magazine has been giving shout-outs to 4 publishers who are doing good, including charitable donations and opening their archives to keep our kids educated and us entertained. Some of the highlights:
• Telecom giant Verizon Communications’ media division, whose digital brands include Engadget, HuffPost, TechCrunch and Yahoo!, among other sites, says it’s donating $10 million in digital ad inventory as well as creative services to support COVID-19 response efforts by the CDC, WHO and five mental health organizations, including the Child Mind Institute, the Crisis Text Line and the Trevor Project.
• The Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation has pledged a contribution of $250,000 to World Central Kitchen, celebrity chef Jose Andres’ foundation which provides meals to frontline workers as well as children, families and seniors who are struggling to meet basic needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
• DC Comics partnered with Book Industry Charitable Foundations and donated $250,000 to help comic book retailers during the economic crisis.

It’s like turning the clock back to a more earnest time on the web, when the novelty of having a voice or being able to connect with anyone still filled us with a sense of boundless opportunity and optimism. It harkens back to the late 1990s and early 2000s—before social media, before smartphones—when going online was still a valuable use of time to seek community.

It’s the average number of people who become infected by an infectious person. If Rt is above 1.0, the virus will spread quickly. When Rt is below 1.0, the virus will stop spreading.
