The semiautomated social network is coming

imageMT @jjvincent It hardly got any attention, but last week LinkedIn began publishing posts written with the help of AI to provoke discussion among users. Snap has created its own chatbot, and Meta is working on AI ‘personas.’ These are early examples of what we might call the semiautomated social network — using AI to stimulate user engagement.

News Corp in talks with AI firm about compensation

News Corp has thrown down the gauntlet to the likes of ChatGPT owner Open AI, insisting AI firms will need to pay news publishers for the right to use its technology on “proprietary” content. Companies like OpenAI train its systems by scanning huge troves of data to produce answers to queries from users. Mr Thomson said it was a “fascinating, emergent issue”, but insisted news publishers should be paid for the practice. “As these AI engines are being trained, and they’re using professional content to be more professional themselves – people certainly will talk about open source, but clearly they are using proprietary content,” Mr Thomson said. “There should obviously be some compensation for that. The more specialist the AI gets, for example, in business, they’re obviously using Dow Jones (publisher of the Wall Street Journal) content.” #AI

Hachette, HarperCollins Offer Voluntary Severance

Hachette Book Group and HarperCollins are both offering voluntary severance packages to some of their employees as the economic outlook for publishers in 2023 remains rocky. A representative from HarperCollins said, “as previously announced, we are working towards a 5 percent workforce reduction,” and the company has “offered some groups a volunteer severance program” as a “part of that process.” A representative from Hachette said that the opportunity for voluntary severance is “not a permanent policy” and that “there is an end date for eligible employees to elect to participate in the program.”

As Bills in Multiple States Threaten Librarians with Criminalization, Advocates Are Fighting Back

image

As of March 1, bills in 17 states sought to change that, motivated by the national attack on books, specifically books by and about the LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC communities. There is a larger goal, according to EveryLibrary executive director John Chrastka. “There’s a novel political theory out there that says, if we can remove the defense from prosecution for K-12 educators, then we can get rid of sex ed. If we can remove the defense from prosecution for higher ed, we can get rid of gender studies,” he says.
