LGBTQ+ Americans are under attack, Human Rights Campaign declares in state of emergency warning
The Human Rights Campaign declared a state of emergency for LGBTQ+ people in the U.S. and released a guidebook pointing to laws it deems discriminatory in each state, along with “know your rights” information and resources to help people relocate to states with stronger LGBTQ+ protections. Sounding the alarm about the current political climate, the nation’s largest organization devoted to the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Americans said travel advisories aren’t enough to help people already living in states where lawmakers have targeted LGBTQ+ people.
“We need champions right now,” HRC President Kelley Robinson said in an interview with The Associated Press.

COVID-19 is a leading cause of death in children and young people in the US
A new study led by researchers at the University of Oxford’s Department of Computer Science has found that, between 2021 and 2022, COVID-19 was a leading cause of death in children and young people in the United States. COVID-19 was the underlying cause of death for more than 940,000 people in the US, including over 1,300 deaths among children and young people aged 0–19 years. Although COVID-19 amplifies the impacts of other diseases (such as pneumonia and influenza), this study focuses on deaths that were directly caused by COVID-19. Therefore, it is likely that these results understate the true burden of COVID-19 related deaths in this age-group.

Apple Vision
The high expectations came from the fact that not only was this product being built by Apple, the undisputed best hardware maker in the world, but also because I am, unlike many, relatively optimistic about VR. What surprised me is that Apple exceeded my expectations on both counts: the hardware and experience were better than I thought possible, and the potential for Vision is larger than I anticipated. The societal impacts, though, are much more complicated.

My First Immersion in Apple Vision Pro: Heavy, Man!
Via @Pogue This is one freaking mind-blowing piece of tech. I mean, when Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in 2007, you could feel the paradigm shifting in real time. This was like that, but better. This headset is 1.0. It’s intended to be catnip for superfans and a shot across the bow of competitors. It’s a safe bet that there will be a Vision Pro 2 in 2025, and a Vision Pro 3 in 2026. Each edition will be lighter and less expensive.
The entire front of the Vision Pro is a screen. It exists purely to show outsiders your face. So is this a video feed of your eyes, captured from inside the goggles? It is not. It is, if you can believe this, a three-dimensional live computer-generated hologram of the top half of your face.
The prep sequence asks you to take off the headset and gaze into its obsidian shiny glass. You turn your head slowly this way and that; make various facial expressions; and open and close your mouth. The cameras are scanning you, building what Apple calls your Persona — a three-dimensional visual avatar of your head. This is what other people see on the visor when they approach you: a deepfake of you. The Vision Pro displays this Persona avatar when you’re on a FaceTime video call with other people. Obviously, nobody wants to look at your face covered up with gear — so what they see instead on their Macs, iPhones, and iPads is your 3-D impersonation.

HT @jafurtado Per @profgalloway “I am troubled by the direction this and other tech platforms and products are taking us. Covid didn’t cause social distancing, the tech industry did. What publishers need to know about Apple’s Vision Pro
Apple Vision Pro Headset Supports Prescription Inserts for Glasses Wearers
Because of the way the headset fits against the face, it does not accommodate glasses, but Apple has a solution for those who need prescription lenses. Apple is partnering with Zeiss to offer Zeiss Optical Inserts that can be customized to each person’s vision prescription. The inserts will attach to the Vision Pro lenses magnetically, allowing for precise viewing and eye tracking. There is no word yet on what the Zeiss prescription inserts will cost, but Apple says that vision correction accessories will be sold separately.

Libraries Need to Prepare for Another Anti-LGBTQ “Hide the Pride” Campaign
Last year, I wrote about the conservative group CatholicVote organizing what they called “Hide the Pride,” which encourages people to check out all children’s and teen LGBTQ books in the library, especially on Pride displays, in order to make sure no one else can access them. They’ve now announced the second annual “Hide the Pride” campaign. Many libraries (and bookstores!) report books being taken off displays and hidden without being checked out, and adult LGBTQ books, especially those on display, are often also targeted. Even if your area is mostly queer-friendly, it just takes one person to clear the entire Pride display. So what can libraries and supportive library patrons do to fight these threats to patrons’ freedom to read?

Who is challenging books? In Iowa, it will be a secret
Two-thirds of all the challenges filed came from a small group of people who filed 10 or more challenges, dubbed “serial filers.” And just 11 serial filers filed more than half the challenges, including a guy who filed 92. With Iowa’s new law requiring schools to be more transparent in providing information on library materials and processes for challenging books, it would be interesting to conduct a similar analysis here. Well, trouble is, the new law was written in a way to thwart such an analysis. Under the new law, “The identity of a parent or guardian who requests the removal of a book, article, outline, handout, video, or other educational material that is available to students in the classroom or in a library operated by the school district … shall be confidential and shall not be a public record subject to disclosure under chapter 22.” Chapter 22 is Iowa’s open records law. But it won’t apply to the names of parents who challenge books. This doesn’t make much sense if you believe the bill’s backers. Lawmakers insisted it will protect children and empower parents to exercise their rights. If that’s the case, why would parents not want the community to know they’re protecting children?
