“One tends to talk about being “first” as an accomplishment, but it’s so loaded. How many people should have already been here?” –@likaluca via @BitchMedia
People of Color In Publishing and We Need Diverse Books teamed up for a town hall that shows how far publishing has come regarding diversity—and how much further it needs to go.
There are more than 711K books—and counting—in Bookshare, a digital reading platform for people with reading barriers including dyslexia, blindness or cerebral palsy. Working with more than 850 publishers across the world, the library adds as many as 100K titles every year.
West Elm and Rent the Runway announced a partnership for customers to rent textiles such as quilts, blankets, throw pillows and linens. At the end of a fixed period, customers can buy the items — or swap them for something new. Similarly, several start-ups — including CasaOne, Fernish and Feather — are already renting full suites of upscale furniture to aspiring urban homemakers on both coasts. Even low-cost Ikea is getting in on the concept: The company announced this month that it would launch a pilot rental program in 30 countries in an effort to keep its furniture out of landfills….Starting this summer, as part of an unlimited Rent the Runway membership for $159 a month, shoppers will be able to revel in a lifestyle they want and have the option to change their selections based on their mood or needs. Although the partnership includes only textile goods, Ortega says eventually it will offer furniture as well.

Pinterest is a great place to find digital art but a terrible place to sell it. The fact that anything online is infinitely copyable makes it tough for artists to establish a sense of scarcity necessary for their work to be perceived as valuable. Yash Nelapati saw this struggle up close as Pinterest’s first employee. Now he has started MakersPlace, where creators can generate a blockchain fingerprint for each of their artworks that proves who made it and lets it be sold as part of a limited edition.
